The Four-Year Piece

There is a moment in every serious build where you stop calling it work. This is that piece.

This Brasiletto logwood came from the coastal ranges of Mexico — one of the densest, most tightly-grained hardwoods in the Western Hemisphere. Heavy enough to sink in water. Figured in amber, rust, and deep chocolate that reads like fire held still.

Before any shaping began, there were years of extraction. Petrified insects. Compressed bark fused into recesses too tight for anything but a dental pick and Japanese chisel. Hours of wire brushing and Dremel through the live edge relief, learning where the wood wanted to open and where it needed to stay closed. Every hour was earned.

Over four years the form revealed itself — a tapered natural point on one end, a raw live edge on the other, and a cathedral underside with three inches of relief that rewards anyone who gets low enough to look. The insect channels were kept open intentionally. They are not flaws. They are authorship.

Two coats of Rubio Monocoat, hand-burnished between applications — living inside the wood, not on top of it.

The base is custom fabricated from half-inch cold-rolled steel plate, cantilevered and offset so the slab’s pointed end reaches past the base entirely — suspended, in flight. The steel is finished in genuine Porsche automotive paint, the same product applied to production vehicles, delivering a gloss so complete it mirrors the underside of the wood floating above it.

The base went through multiple iterations to get the proportions exactly right. That part took as long as some pieces take to build entirely.

One piece. Four years. Never repeated.
